Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Owens Corning ridge vent installation in Houston typically runs $650 to $1,450 installed on a standard single-family home, depending on linear footage, roof pitch, and whether the existing decking at the ridge needs repair. We stock Owens Corning-compatible ridge vent products on our trucks and can usually complete the full swap in a single visit. Most Houston homeowners discover their ridge vent has failed after a hot August afternoon when the attic feels like a sauna, or after finding damp insulation near the ceiling during hurricane season.
A ridge vent is the exhaust side of your attic ventilation system. It runs along the peak of the roof, letting hot, humid air escape as intake vents pull cooler air in. When it fails or was installed wrong in the first place, the whole system backs up. In Houston, where summer attic temperatures routinely climb above 140°F and humidity sits at 90%, a failed ridge vent doesn’t just make your AC work harder. It bakes your shingles from underneath, shortens their lifespan by years, and invites mold into the underside of your deck.
Travis Oakley grew up in the San Fernando Valley and learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before bringing his crew to Houston. We’ve torn off and re-roofed homes from Meyerland to the Energy Corridor, and we’ve seen what Gulf Coast heat and humidity do to an attic that can’t breathe. A roof either keeps water out or it doesn’t – everything else is details.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
This guide applies to any home running an Owens Corning ridge vent system, including the VentSure series and the older rigid-profile ridge vents Owens Corning has sold over the past two decades. The most common we see in Houston are the 4-foot VentSure strips, which are typically installed with Owens Corning Duration or Oakridge shingles to maintain a matched warranty package.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners never hear: Owens Corning’s newer VentSure strips are engineered to work with their proprietary shingle profile, but older Owens Corning ridge vents used an external baffle design that is not cross-compatible with today’s universal ridge vent profiles. If you have a 15-year-old Owens Corning ridge vent and assume any replacement strip will snap in, you’ll end up with an air gap or an overlapping seam that leaks during the first hard rain. We match the replacement to what is actually on your ridge, not what the box at the big-box store says will fit everything.
We are an independent Houston roofing contractor. We are not affiliated with Owens Corning, but we install their products because they hold up in this climate when the installation is done right.

Signs Your Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic temperature spikes in late afternoon. If your upstairs rooms get noticeably hotter after 3 p.m., your ridge vent may be blocked or collapsed. The exhaust path has to be clear for the system to work, and crushed internal baffles from a past hail repair or improper foot traffic are a common culprit.
- Moisture staining on the underside of roof decking near the peak. This tells us humid attic air is condensing against the deck instead of being pushed out. In Houston, this is the first sign of a larger ventilation failure that will eventually rot the sheathing.
- Visible separation or warping of the ridge vent profile. UV exposure, hail, and thermal expansion break down the plastic over time. Once the vent loses its flat profile against the shingles, water blows in during sideways rain, which Houston gets during every tropical storm watch.
- Shingle granule loss concentrated near the ridge line. When attic heat is not being exhausted, it rises against the ridge and cooks the shingles from both sides. Premature granule loss along the peak is a direct symptom of a failing ridge vent.
- You hear a faint rattle or clatter during high winds. That is the internal baffle moving, which means the fasteners have pulled loose or the vent profile has cracked. A loose ridge vent is a wind-driven rain entry point and a tear-off risk in a Houston Gulf storm.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed Owens Corning-compatible ridge vent replacement in Houston runs $650 to $1,450 for most single-family homes. Here is the line-item breakdown we give every homeowner before work starts:
- Ridge vent material: $180 to $380, depending on linear feet and whether we’re matching VentSure rigid strips or a comparable profile from our stock
- Removal and disposal of old vent: $100 to $200
- Labor and fastening: $300 to $650, including resetting the cap shingles and sealing end caps properly
- Decking repair at the ridge, if needed: $80 to $220 per 4×8 section, but only if we find rot or water damage once the old vent is pulled
The spread is driven by roof accessibility, pitch, and how much of the existing deck is salvageable. We don’t charge extra to tell you the deck is rotted and then change the price at the door. That number goes on paper after we inspect, before any work starts. It does not move. Every ridge vent replacement we do is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not right within one full year, we come back and fix it at no charge, in writing.

This is a part where the honest answer is mixed. You can safely check the vent from the ground with binoculars for obvious lifting, cracking, or missing sections. You can also go into the attic on a sunny day and look for light coming through gaps at the peak. That tells you if the vent is physically dislodged.
What you should not do is walk an elevated Houston roof in July to replace a ridge vent yourself. Ridge work puts you at the highest point on the roof, the shingles are slick from heat and mildew, and a fall from even a single-story roofline means a hospital visit and months of recovery. We carry the right replacement profiles on our trucks, we know how to cut the ridge opening correctly without damaging the underlayment, and we seal it so a tropical storm does not turn it into a water inlet. FAQs
In Houston’s UV and humidity exposure, an Owens Corning ridge vent realistically lasts 12 to 15 years. The plastic embrittles from intense sun, and the baffles can loosen from repeated thermal expansion, which means it needs replacement before the shingles around it do.
A section that has popped its fasteners can sometimes be re-secured if the vent profile itself is still intact and water has not gotten under the cap shingles. If the baffles are crushed or the plastic has cracked from UV, patching it is temporary at best. Call (940) 461-8481 for a straight answer on whether your vent is worth saving.
Most single-family ridge vent replacements in Houston are done in half a day, including removing the old vent, inspecting the ridge decking, installing the new vent, and re-sealing the cap shingles. If we find decking rot that needs replacement, plan on a full day.
We stock Owens Corning-compatible ridge vent profiles on our trucks, along with GAF and CertainTeed options, so we don’t have to send you to a supply house with a part number and a shrug. If your home needs the specific VentSure rigid profile, we can have it the same week.
