GAF Shingle Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

GAF shingle repair in Houston typically runs $350 – $850 for a standard repair of 10 – 20 shingles, and most jobs are completed the same day we show up. We stock GAF-compatible shingles on our trucks, including common Timberline and Royal Sovereign colors, so matching your existing roof doesn’t mean waiting on a special order. Most Houston homeowners discover they need a GAF shingle repair after a storm blows through, or when they glance up from the driveway and spot a shingle hanging out of place or a dark patch that wasn’t there before. Travis Oakley has seen enough Houston roofs to know that a single missing shingle in April can become a ceiling stain by July.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

Most GAF shingle repairs we handle in Houston involve either the Timberline HDZ or Timberline UHDZ lines, which are the most common architectural shingles installed on Harris County homes, along with the older Royal Sovereign 3-tab line that still covers a lot of roofs built before 2010. The compatibility issue that trips up most DIYers is that GAF has shifted shingle dimensions and exposure over the years. A Timberline from 2015 is not always a direct visual match to a Timberline made today, even in the same color name.

Here’s what we check when matching your GAF shingles:

  • The size and exposure. Timberline HDZ shingles are metric-sized, and older US Customary-sized GAF shingles will not lay flat against them properly.
  • The color code on the wrapper, not the name. GAF has reformulated some colors. “Charcoal” from 2012 and “Charcoal” from 2024 are close but not identical. We match from actual shingle samples, not the label.
  • OEM vs. aftermarket. For GAF specifically, we almost always recommend OEM GAF shingles for repairs. Aftermarket generics never match GAF’s granule color blend exactly, and on a roof that faces the street, that mismatch is visible from the curb. For high-traffic areas near the ridge or valleys, OEM is the only choice we’ll make.

Brennan Roofing Co Houston is an independent roofing contractor. We are not affiliated with GAF, but we work with GAF products every week and can source the right shingles without sending you through a warranty claim maze.

Signs Your GAF Shingle Repair Is Failing

Here are the five most common things we find on Houston roofs when a GAF shingle section has started to fail:

  • Curling at the corners. GAF shingles curl when the asphalt has dried out from years of Gulf Coast sun exposure. Once a shingle curls enough to catch wind, it starts breaking off in pieces. We see this most on south-facing roof slopes in Houston neighborhoods like Meyerland and Westbury.
  • Granule loss you can see from the ground. If your GAF shingles look patchy or you find granules in your gutters after every rain, the protective mineral layer is failing. That leaves the asphalt underneath exposed to UV, which accelerates failure fast in Houston’s climate.
  • Missing shingles after a storm. This is the obvious one. A missing GAF shingle leaves the nail line and underlayment exposed, and water gets in quickly. Even one missing shingle is an open invitation for roof deck damage.
  • Shingles that feel spongy or soft when stepped on. This usually means the roof deck underneath has absorbed moisture from a failed shingle or flashing. By the time the shingle feels soft, the plywood underneath needs attention, not just the shingle itself.
  • Visible nails backing out. GAF shingles installed with nails that are too short, overdriven, or placed too high will eventually pop through the shingle above. Backed-out nails create nail pops, which leave a direct water path into the deck. We find this constantly in Houston homes roofed during the 2015 – 2020 building boom.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard GAF shingle repair on a Houston home, budget $350 – $850. The range is driven by how many shingles need to be replaced, whether the repair is on a simple one-story section or a steep second-story slope, and whether the underlayment or decking underneath needs patching. A small repair of 5 – 10 shingles on an accessible slope usually lands at the lower end. A repair that requires replacing a section of rotted decking, reworking flashing, or working around a chimney runs toward the top, sometimes slightly above if decking replacement is extensive.

Our pricing model means the price goes on paper before we start. Not an estimate that moves once the crew arrives, not a range that changes at the door. The written price includes removal of the failed shingles, inspection of the underlayment and decking, new GAF shingles matched to your color, installation with proper nailing, and cleanup.

Every repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within one year, we come back and fix it at no charge, in writing, no fine print. That matters in Houston, where a repair done in February gets tested by hurricane season in August.

DIY or Call Us?

Shingle removal is not inherently dangerous like working on a high-tension spring or a live electrical panel, but it’s also not a beginner’s job. The real risk in GAF shingle repair is not the fall. It’s what you can’t see: the roof deck underneath may be rotted, the underlayment may be torn, or the existing shingles may be so brittle that walking on them causes more damage than the original repair would have fixed. We have watched homeowners turn a $400 shingle repair into a $4,000 deck replacement by pulling up shingles they weren’t prepared to deal with.

What you can safely do is document the damage. Take photos from the ground. Note where the leak is showing inside the house, if it has. Check your attic for water stains or daylight coming through the deck. That’s useful information for us, and you can gather it without getting on a ladder. What you shouldn’t do is get up on the roof and start lifting shingles unless you know exactly what you’re looking at and have the right materials to seal what you open up.

We field calls every week from homeowners who started a DIY GAF repair and stopped when they found more damage underneath. That’s fine. We can pick up where you left off. Call (940) 461-8481 and we’ll come look at it, put a written price in your hand, and fix it right the first time.
