CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials across Houston, with most deck repairs and underlayment replacements running between $850 and $2,400 installed, depending on the square footage and how much decking has to come out. Most jobs are done in a single day. Homeowners usually discover the problem the hard way: a ceiling stain after a hard rain, a soft spot underfoot in the attic, or a roofer pointing out delaminated decking during an inspection. It’s rarely the shingles. It’s what’s under them.
Brennan Roofing Co Houston is an independent roofing contractor, not affiliated with CertainTeed. We install their materials because they hold up in Gulf Coast heat, but the underlayment and deck are where roofs actually live or die in this city.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed’s underlayment line splits into two families: synthetic and felt. The synthetic options – RoofRunner, DiamondDeck, and WinterGuard – go under shingle systems from the Landmark, Presidential Shake, and XT series. The felt line, including their 15-pound and 30-pound products, is what most Houston homes built before 2010 have sitting on the deck right now.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: CertainTeed’s WinterGuard and DiamondDeck products require a smooth, dry deck surface to bond properly. If your decking has old adhesive residue or has already started to delaminate, the manufacturer’s own installation specs say you’re wasting material putting new underlayment over it. The deck repair has to happen first. We stock RoofRunner and DiamondDeck on the truck, and we can order WinterGuard same-week for any Houston job. For budget-conscious repairs, we also carry GAF and Owens Corning synthetic underlayment as aftermarket equivalents that meet the same ASTM standards.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Dark streaks or water stains on the underside of your decking in the attic. This means water has made it past the underlayment and is sitting against the wood. By the time you see the stain, the decking is already compromised in that spot.
- Spongy or soft sections when you walk the roof. Houston’s humidity accelerates OSB delamination. Once a sheet starts to swell and flake, it won’t hold a nail or staple properly anymore.
- Underlayment that’s brittle, cracked, or peeling at the eaves. Felt underlayment dries out and loses its asphalt oils after 15 to 20 years in Gulf Coast sun exposure. Synthetic holds up longer, but mechanical damage from storms can tear it.
- Granules collecting in gutters directly under a roof valley or penetration. That’s not shingle wear. That’s water tracking under the shingle line and washing away the underlayment fibers.
- Interior ceiling stains that reappear after a shingle patch. The shingle was never the problem. The underlayment and decking underneath were already shot, and nobody addressed them the first time.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical Houston single-family roof section, expect:
- Deck replacement (CDX plywood or OSB, per 4×8 sheet): $75 to $110 installed per sheet, including tear-out and disposal
- CertainTeed RoofRunner synthetic underlayment: $0.35 to $0.55 per square foot installed
- CertainTeed DiamondDeck synthetic underlayment: $0.50 to $0.75 per square foot installed
- CertainTeed WinterGuard ice & water shield (valleys, eaves, penetrations): $0.80 to $1.10 per square foot installed
- Full roof section deck repair with underlayment (200 to 400 sq ft): $850 to $2,400
- Whole-roof decking replacement with new underlayment (1,500 to 2,500 sq ft): $4,500 to $9,500
The spread comes down to two things: how many sheets of decking are actually compromised, and whether your roof has valleys, skylights, or chimney penetrations that need WinterGuard. Every Brennan Roofing Co Houston job gets a written price before any work starts. That number doesn’t move at the door. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, and we come back for free if the repair fails within that year.
DIY or Call Us?
You can do the visual inspection yourself: get into the attic with a flashlight on a dry day and look for the stains and delamination we described above. You can also check from the roof edge whether underlayment is visible and crumbling at the eaves. What you should not do is start pulling shingles and cutting out decking. The moment you open a roof section in Houston, you’re racing the next storm. A half-open roof with exposed decking that catches an afternoon thunderstorm becomes a whole-house problem in under an hour.
If you find the signs, call us at (940) 461-8481. We’ll send a background-checked technician to map the damage, show you what’s actually failed, and put the repair price in writing. No pressure, no upsell.
FAQs
Synthetic underlayment like RoofRunner or DiamondDeck lasts 20 to 30 years in Houston if the roof system above it is intact. Felt underlayment realistically gives you 12 to 18 years in our humidity before the asphalt dries out. Call (940) 461-8481 if you’re not sure which one you have.
Yes, if the decking is still dry, solid, and smooth enough for the new underlayment to bond. If the decking has delaminated or shows water damage, patching underlayment over it just hides the problem. We’ll tell you which situation you have before we touch anything.
Most Houston deck and underlayment repairs are done in one working day. Larger sections or full-roof replacements can run two to three days, depending on weather and how much decking comes out.
We carry CertainTeed RoofRunner and DiamondDeck on our trucks in Houston, along with GAF and Owens Corning synthetic equivalents. WinterGuard is usually a same-week order. When we quote your job, we’ll tell you exactly what’s going on and what it costs.
