CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

CertainTeed ridge vent installation in Houston typically runs $850 to $1,400 for a standard single-story home, including materials, labor, and haul-off of the old vent. We keep CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent material on our trucks, so most installations happen the same day we arrive for the estimate. Homeowners usually find us after a hailstorm, a leak in the attic, or when they spot cracked plastic shards from the old vent scattered across the roof valley.

Travis Oakley will tell you straight: a ridge vent is a working part, not a decoration. When it fails, your attic stops breathing. That means heat builds up in August, moisture lingers after every Gulf Coast rain, and your shingles cook from both sides. By the time you see water stains on the ceiling, the vent has usually been failing for months.

Here’s what you need to know about matching, pricing, and installing a CertainTeed ridge vent in Houston before you call anyone.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed’s ridge vent line includes the ShingleVent II, FilterVent, and Mountain Ridge series, plus the newer SwiftStart system for reroofs. The key compatibility gotcha: ShingleVent II comes in 20-foot and 50-foot rolls, and the 20-foot roll does not interchange cleanly with the 50-foot roll’s connector profile. If your existing vent was installed from a 50-foot roll and we bring the shorter roll, the seam won’t lock properly without an adapter. We check the original packaging label in your attic or match the exposed vent profile before we cut anything.

Most Houston homes built after 2005 with CertainTeed shingles have ShingleVent II installed. Homes with higher-end architectural shingles often got Mountain Ridge instead, which sits lower and blends with the shingle line. FilterVent shows up on older homes and on some commercial low-slope jobs.

On OEM versus aftermarket: CertainTeed’s own vent is a baffled mesh-and-fabric design, and the generics that look identical usually skip the exterior fabric wrap. In Houston humidity, that missing wrap is exactly where the condensation problems start. We install the real CertainTeed product when the roof and vent are both CertainTeed. If your shingles are GAF or Owens Corning, we’ll tell you and match accordingly; we stock both on the truck.

One more thing: CertainTeed’s warranty language on their vent requires installation per their published fastener spec. We follow it. A lot of crews use a roofing nailer set too hot and blow right through the vent flange. That’s a warranty-voiding install that looks fine from the ground for about three years.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Shards of black plastic in the gutter or on the lawn after a storm. The UV-stabilized plastic on CertainTeed vents gets brittle after 10 to 12 years of Houston sun. Once the outer profile starts cracking, water gets under the vent and runs along the ridge beam.
  • Attic temperature feels hotter than it should in summer. A working ridge vent pulls hot air out continuously. If the vent’s internal baffles are clogged with dust, insulation, or broken shingle granules, the attic becomes a furnace and your AC works harder than it should.
  • Water stains on the ceiling directly below the ridge line. That’s not always the vent itself. Sometimes the nails holding the vent backed out and the sealant failed. Either way, water is getting in at the highest point of the roof, which means it’s running down the inside of the decking before it shows up on your drywall.
  • You hear wind rattle or flapping during storms. The vent’s internal baffle can separate from the outer profile. When wind hits it, the loose section flaps. It’s loud, annoying, and it’s also letting wind-driven rain push sideways into the attic during a squall, which Houston gets plenty of.
  • Shingles near the ridge are curling or cracked. Heat that can’t escape through the ridge vent gets trapped under the shingles. The decking soaks it up, and the shingles start to age from the underside. If your shingles are curling only near the peak, the vent hasn’t been doing its job for a while.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, a full CertainTeed ridge vent replacement runs $850 to $1,400 on a typical single-story home with up to 60 linear feet of ridge. Two-story homes, steep pitches, or ridges longer than 60 feet push the job toward $1,500 to $1,900. If sections of the decking under the old vent are water-damaged, replacing a sheet of OSB adds roughly $70 to $90 per sheet, and we’ll show you the rot before we cut anything.

What’s included: removal and haul-off of the old vent, inspection of the ridge decking, new CertainTeed vent cut and fastened to spec, new end caps, new sealant at all termination points, and a full written line-item price before we start. No change orders, no surprise at the door. The work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the installation fails in the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge. In writing.

The honest variable is decking condition. Houston attics run hot and humid, and a failed vent accelerates rot at the ridge. Maybe the decking is fine. Maybe it’s soft. You’ll know before we cut, because the price goes on paper first and it does not move.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely walk your roof’s ridge line with binoculars from the ground and check for cracks, missing end caps, or lifted sections. You can also go into the attic on a sunny day and look for pinpoints of light along the ridge, which means water can get in. Those checks are yours to do anytime.

What you shouldn’t do is get up on a steep Houston roof with a nail gun and a roll of vent. Ridge vent installation means cutting away shingle caps, pulling old nails, checking the decking, and fastening the vent so water can’t blow under it in a 40-mph squall. One misplaced nail through the underlayment and you’ve created a leak that’ll show up in your bedroom ceiling three months from now. Our technicians are background-checked, uniformed, and trained to the Garrison Standard, and they do this every week. If you want to inspect, go ahead. If you want it installed right, call (940) 461-8481 and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts.
