IKO Ridge Vent Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
IKO ridge vent installation in Houston typically runs $450 – $900 for most single-family homes, including the vent material, removal of the old unit, and a fully watertight re-flash. We stock IKO-compatible ridge vent products on our trucks, so the swap is usually finished in under four hours from the time our crew sets ladders.
The way most owners discover a failed ridge vent isn’t dramatic. It starts as a brown watermark on the ceiling below the ridgeline, or a musty smell in the attic on a humid Gulf Coast morning. Travis Oakley has seen it enough times to know the pattern: the plastic gets brittle under a Houston summer, a storm-year wind gets under the lip, and water finds its way in slow and quiet until the decking tells on it.
A roof either keeps water out or it doesn’t, and everything else is details.
Which IKO Models This Applies To
IKO makes two main ridge vent profiles we work with in Houston: the IKO Armourvent Multi and the IKO Armourvent Continuous. The Multi is a molded vent in 4-foot sections. The Continuous is a roll-form product that runs the full ridge as one unbroken piece. Both ventilate the same way, but they’re not interchangeable on every roof, and that’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss.
The Armourvent Multi sits lower on the ridge and fits narrower ridge caps. The Continuous needs a wider seat and works better on roofs where the visible ridge line matters more to the homeowner. If your current vent was nailed through the outer storm-band flange, you’ve got the Multi. If it appears to disappear under the cap shingle with no exposed nail line, it’s probably the Continuous.
Neither is a bad product. But matching the replacement to the existing profile matters because the roof deck slot was cut for a specific vent width. Swapping a Multi for a Continuous without re-cutting the slot leaves a 3/4-inch gap where Houston rain will find its way in. We match the old profile unless a full ridge re-slot is already part of the job.
We are an independent roofing contractor, not an IKO dealer or affiliate. We install IKO-compatible venting alongside GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed products, and we’ll tell you plainly which one fits your roof and which one doesn’t.

Signs Your IKO Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Brown staining on the ceiling below the ridge line. This is the classic. Water enters at the vent, runs down a rafter, and pools at the ceiling joist. By the time the stain shows, the decking under the vent has usually been wet for weeks. The vent is the entry point.
- Brittle or cracked plastic on the vent body. Houston sun does not negotiate. After seven to nine years, the UV exposure makes IKO’s polypropylene vent material stiff, and any impact, a careless shoe, a small branch, a hailstone, turns it into a crack. Once water has a crack, the vent is finished.
- Missing or lifted storm bands. The outer flange of the vent is what the shingles lap over to keep water out. When a Houston squall line hits, wind-driven rain gets under that flange if the shingles have unsealed or if the original fasteners worked loose.
- Attic heat that climbs through August despite the AC running full-time. A vent that is clogged with blown-in insulation or broken inside won’t pull hot air out. The ridge vent is passive; it depends on intake air from the soffits. No intake, no exhaust. The attic cooks.
- Visible rust on the shingle-over nail heads or vent fasteners. That rust means condensation is sitting where it shouldn’t, which means the vent isn’t moving air effectively, which means the fastener condition is your early warning that the system isn’t doing its job.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Houston single-family home, replacing an IKO ridge vent installation runs between $450 and $900 installed. At the lower end, you’ve got a straight vent swap on a ridge under 30 linear feet with good decking and no new cap shingles. At the upper end, the old vent has been leaking long enough that we’re cutting out rotted decking, replacing it, re-flashing, and re-capping the entire ridge.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Vent material (IKO-compatible): $6 – $10 per linear foot
- Labor and tear-off of old vent: $9 – $14 per linear foot
- Decking replacement, if rotted: $3 – $5 per square foot of sheathing
- Cap shingles and fasteners: $2 – $4 per linear foot
- Total typical installed range: $450 – $900
The written price goes on paper before any work starts. No moving the number at the door, no surprise change orders.
Every ridge vent installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the vent fails, leaks, or comes loose within one full year, we come back and fix it at no charge. In writing, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground or a ladder placed far from the ridge: see if the vent plastic looks cracked, see if shingles are lifted at the ridge, look for daylight coming through the vent interior from inside the attic. Those are inspection steps, not repairs.
Where DIY goes wrong on a ridge vent is the deck slot. A proper IKO ridge vent needs a precise opening cut into the roof sheathing: the right width, stopped at the right distance from the ridge ends, with the vent centered and the end caps properly installed. Get the slot wrong and you’ve opened a water channel into your attic. That’s not a caulk gun fix; that’s a new strip of decking and a re-cut. And working at the ridge, especially on a Houston roof with a 6/12 or steeper pitch, is where most homeowner injuries happen.

FAQs
Expect 10 to 15 years in the Houston climate, with UV and hurricane-season wind being the two factors that shorten it. A shaded ridge on a comp shingle roof will outlast a fully exposed ridge on a two-story by two or three years.
Sometimes, if the failure is just lifted storm bands or a loose section. Cracked vent plastic and water-compromised decking are a replace, not a patch. Call (940) 461-8481 and we’ll give you the honest read.
A standard ridge vent swap on a Houston home runs two to four hours. If we’re replacing rotted decking or re-cutting the ridge slot, add another hour or two. The written scope spells out the timeline before we start.
Yes. Our trucks carry IKO-compatible Armourvent Multi and Continuous sections, cap shingles, and flashing, so most replacements happen in a single visit. If we need a specialty profile, we source it from our Houston suppliers same-day.
