GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GAF-compatible ridge vent systems throughout Houston, with most jobs running $450 to $900 installed for a standard single-family roof. The majority of ridge vent replacements we handle are completed the same day, usually in under four hours. Homeowners typically discover the problem after a rainstorm, when they spot water staining along the ceiling near an exterior wall, or when they climb into the attic in July and realize the space feels more like a sauna than a ventilated roof deck.
Ridge vents run along the peak of your roof and let hot, humid air escape continuously. When they fail, Houston’s climate punishes the house fast: attic temperatures spike past 140°F in August, moisture builds up, and your shingles start cooking from underneath. A roof either keeps water out or it doesn’t – everything else is details. But ventilation is the detail that determines whether your decking rots out ten years early or makes it the full haul.
Travis Oakley and our crew have been replacing ridge vents in Houston neighborhoods from Meyerland to the Energy Corridor long enough to know which GAF models hold up to Gulf Coast humidity and which ones need attention at the ten-year mark. We are an independent roofing contractor, not affiliated with GAF, but we install their ridge vent lines because they perform consistently in this climate.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
GAF makes two primary ridge vent lines we install in Houston: the Cobra Ridge Vent and the Snow Country Advanced. The Cobra line is what you’ll find on most Texas roofs. It comes in 4-foot sections, either roll-form (Cobra Ridge Runner) or rigid (Cobra Rigid Vent 3), and both fit standard 3/4-inch ridge slots cut along the peak. The Snow Country model is overkill for Houston and we rarely recommend it here.
The compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: GAF’s Cobra Ridge Runner is a rolled product that must be paired with GAF’s Cobra Ridge Cap Shingles or a cap shingle with a matching profile. Some contractors will install generic cap shingles over a GAF vent, and within a few Houston summers the caps start lifting because the nail line doesn’t align with the vent’s reinforced edge. We match the vent to the cap shingle every time.
If you can’t read the label on your existing vent (it’s usually printed on the underside of the plastic), measure the width. GAF Cobra vents run 11-1/4 inches wide with a 5/8-inch exposed baffle. If your vent measures 9 inches, it’s likely a competitor product like Owens Corning’s VentSure or CertainTeed’s Air Vent – we stock those as well and can match whatever is already on your roof.
As for OEM versus aftermarket: for ridge vents, we install GAF-branded product on GAF roofs. The cost difference is small enough that aftermarket plastic isn’t worth the fit risk. GAF’s warranty language assumes their ventilation products are used, and mixing brands gives the manufacturer an easy out if you ever file a shingle claim.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on ceilings near exterior walls. This is the classic symptom. Ridge vents sit at the highest point of the roof, and when the end caps or the vent’s internal baffle fails, wind-driven rain gets pushed sideways into the attic. Houston’s thunderstorms, with their near-horizontal rain, find these gaps fast.
- Attic temperature that feels punishing in summer. A working ridge vent paired with soffit intake vents should keep attic temps within 10 to 15 degrees of outdoor air. If your attic is 30 degrees hotter than the outside temperature in July, the vent isn’t moving air. Expanded insulation won’t fix this.
- Visible cracking or brittleness in the vent plastic. Houston’s UV and heat cycles turn rigid vent plastic brittle after eight to ten years. Walk the peak (carefully, from a ladder) and look for hairline cracks or sections where the plastic has warped and pulled away from the cap shingle.
- Shingle granules collecting in gutters near the ridge line. When the ridge vent fails and moisture builds up along the peak, the cap shingles and nearby field shingles degrade faster. Excess granule loss near the peak is an early warning.
- Musty odor in the attic or visible mold on rafters near the peak. Failed ridge ventilation traps Houston’s humidity in the attic. Mold on the underside of the roof deck or along rafters near the ridge means the vent stopped moving air months ago.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, GAF ridge vent replacement runs $450 to $900 for a standard single-family home with 40 to 60 linear feet of ridge line. The spread depends on three things: how much ridge you have, whether the old vent’s end caps and connectors can be reused, and whether the cap shingles need to come off and be replaced to do the job right. Most Houston homes fall in the $550 to $750 range.
Our price includes the GAF vent sections, new end caps, new connectors, fasteners, and the cap shingles if yours are too brittle to reinstall. It also includes removing and hauling off the old vent. Every job begins with a written price in hand before any work starts. That number does not move at the door. The work is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if the installation fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge, in writing.
One Houston-specific note: if your roof deck has existing water damage near the ridge, we’ll show you photos and give you a separate line-item price for decking replacement before we open anything up. You’ll know the worst-case number before we start.
| Item | Typical Houston Range |

What you can safely do yourself: identify the vent brand and measure the ridge line length so you have a ballpark material cost. Take photos from a ladder without climbing onto the roof. That’s it, and that’s honest advice from someone who has watched Houston homeowners turn a $600 vent replacement into a $4,000 deck repair after a misstep on a 6/12 pitch in July heat.
Ridge vent installation requires removing cap shingles along the peak, pulling the old vent, seating the new vent so the baffle sits flat and doesn’t pinch, and re-nailing cap shingles on the correct nail line. Get any of that wrong and the vent leaks or the caps blow off in the first strong storm. Roof work in Houston’s summer heat is also genuinely dangerous – the shingle surface can hit 160°F, and heat exhaustion on a roof slope happens faster than most people expect.
Our crew does this work in a morning, and the price is on paper before we start. If you want to tackle it yourself, we’ll still answer your questions honestly on the phone. But if you’d rather have it done and done right, call (940) 461-8481 for a free estimate.
FAQs
A GAF ridge vent in Houston typically lasts 10 to 12 years before the plastic becomes brittle and the baffle loses effectiveness, though the cap shingles may need attention at the 8-year mark. Houston’s UV exposure and heat cycles wear the vent faster than the national average, which runs closer to 15 years. Call (940) 461-8481 and we can tell you what condition yours is in with a free inspection.
Small issues like a cracked end cap or a loose connector can be repaired for $75 to $150, but a vent showing widespread brittleness or water intrusion needs full replacement. Patching a failing vent in Houston just moves the leak to a different section. We’ll tell you which situation you have before quoting anything.
Most ridge vent replacements in Houston take 3 to 4 hours from start to cleanup. If the cap shingles need replacement or the decking requires repairs, the job may run 5 to 6 hours. We schedule the work so the vent is sealed and watertight before we leave, same day.
Yes, our trucks carry GAF Cobra Ridge Runner and Cobra Rigid Vent 3 in the standard configuration, plus end caps and connectors. We also stock Owens Corning and CertainTeed vent lines for homes with mixed-brand roofs. Most Houston jobs are completed the same day we diagnose the problem.
